Today’s review, again striving for that impartial view of looking at a non-art site for SEO, is for an Indianapolis plumber.
Right off I see what I really like to find in business sites–the phone number and contact information prominently placed. It’s more than frustrating to have to search for this time of info. Let’s look a little more closely at the site and its search engine optimization.
A check of valid code tells us that the site is not valid XHTML. The errors that do come up are pretty easy to fix and worth the effort. The CSS did validate, but there were warnings. For me, I’d take the time to correct them. Since this is a service provider, one of the characteristics I’m sure that they would want to portray is their thoroughness. This follows through to the website itself.
The website misses many important SEO opportunities. There are no meta tags present for keywords and description. With the targeted audience this provider would have, use of keywords and a description if just noting where they’re at could prove valuable.
The code does make use of header tags, but uses <h1> more than once. As the code itself would imply, it is more appropriate to use this tag once for the main heading. Similarly, while alt attributes are present on the home page, something more descriptive than “listing photo” would serve this site better.
The photo page as well has a curious mix of photographs that frankly wouldn’t persuade me to call them, unless the fact that 24 hour service is being highlighted. Again, there are missed opportunities for alt attributes, with duplicate content on several images. Duplicate content is also found on the testimonial page which repeats content on the main body and the sidebar. Unfortunately, the site has the appearance of one quickly thrown together and not serving the client well.
There are no inbound links to the site. At the very least, one would at least look for a Chamber of Commerce or city businesses link. Certainly, a link to a trade or union site would drive some more targeted traffic to the site. Overall, this site needs a lot of SEO love.
