An interesting story was published in the New York Times about the power of strangers to cheer you up.
The study discusses the impact that strangers have over our happiness. Think about it. The other day I received a phone call from a non-client at the day job. The woman was questioning a policy and frankly, was rather rude with me. I didn’t know this person, but her rudeness soured my morning.
Conversely, people do some wonderfully kind gestures. I received an email regarding a comment a fellow artist made on a painting of mine. He remarked, “I was watching for a couple minutes waiting for the ducks to rise.” I was so touched by his words. Realism in my art is my goal or at least the ability to transport the viewer to the world I created. I didn’t know this man, but his kind words made my day.
Another artist paid me a great compliment after I responded to a post regarding the value of Twitter. She started following me and publicly acknowledged the wisdom of my post. Again, a stranger, albeit someone I’ve seen on these forums before, but a kind gesture to a stranger. I was humbled by her kindness.
As artists, we often face rejection. The auction ends without a sale. The gallery doesn’t want your latest. You didn’t even place in the art show. To survive, we become thick skinned.
We artists need a boost now and then to get over the days of rejection. We need reinforcement of the value of our art. Therefore, here is my challenge to you; reach out to another artist with a gesture of kindness. Compliment an artist’s work. Praise their style. Make someone’s day.

It’s been so rewarding connecting with other artists. I’ve also enjoyed random acts of kindness by the cyber community that has restored my faith in
