I like to browse antique stores. It’s fun finding the things I grew up with, now for sale, now worth a lot of money. If we only knew.
I admire the craftsmanship of some items. The crockery is marvelous. The kitchen utensils feel heavy and well made. Some things leave you scratching your head though. What purpose could that have possibly served?
The antiques also harken back to times past, maybe when things were a bit slower and not as crazy. It’s natural then that I’d like to recapture these times with my still life watercolor paintings.
Every item has to be old. You won’t find TVs or cell phones in my paintings. Because the objects often do themselves, I try to put together a story with still lifes, really all my paintings. I spend a lot of time researching, searching for good reference photographs. That describes how I created, “Coffee Break.”
Cows are a favorite subject for me. I often place them in farm watercolor paintings. When I happened upon this creamer, it had to be included. The coffee pot is like one my grandma used to have. I have several bowls of that same style. So, there’s a sentimental value here as well. A hand-crank coffee mill completes the scene.
This is one of my favorite still life paintings and certainly the biggest. I don’t often work on full sheet paintings because of space, but I have to admit that the freedom of all that paper is quite exhilarating. Well, another idea just came to my mind regarding another painting. Back to the studio!
