29 Mar 2010 Monday Marketing Meeting—Investing in You
 |  Category: Artist Life

Today’s marketing meeting is not so much about actual marketing as it is about supporting your career as a self-representing artist. Today’s message is about taking care of you.

Too often, we push ourselves way too far, perhaps even more so now with the present state of the economy. It can be hard to paint warm, inviting scenes when you’re faced with a stack of bills.

It is so vital to keep things in check so that you don’t suffocate your creativity. More than ever, your creativity can help you find peace and relief from stress. That meditative state that you find when you create can be your salvation.

Take the lesson that these times teach us and use them to your advantage. If sales are down, diversify. Look into sites like Zazzle and CafePress for ways to resell your images. Find ways to do affiliate blogging. Undoubtedly, you have your favorite tools and stores. Promote them, and make a little extra on the side.

Have some old art books you don’t use anymore? Sell them on Amazon. Looking for some “free” publicity? Donate a painting to a charity auction. Want some commissions? Put your business card up at public bulletin boards in coffee shops. Put an ad on CraigsList.

The point is there are lots of other options. Maybe one isn’t as lucrative, but taken as a whole, you will at least have some money coming in. If you are in business for yourself, you are always on the lookout for opportunities. Do yourself a favor and grab a hold of a few of them.
