“The time to relax is — when you don’t have time for it.”
~Sidney J. Harris

Today’s Monday Marketing Meeting touches on a subject that is one we all probably need to hear–unplug. This is especially so for self-representing artists, who do it all. Yes, that means you.

Too easily we get drawn into more projects, more work. Perhaps you’ve really taken a liking to Twitter. Now, you’re tweeting constantly, checking your replies and DMs. Retweeting has become a way of life. While it’s good for you to market, you also need to take time for yourself. Schedule your time to unplug and do something other than work.

Keeping up a fast pace wears on you not only physically, but mentally. To bring fresh ideas into your marketing, you need to back off every now and again and regroup. You probably use techniques like walking or meditation to come up with new ideas for paintings and your art. What makes this work is that you are not actively engaged. Your subconscious mind is driving the session. In the same way, taking time from your marketing it a good way to engage the subconscious to help your sales ideas.

Here’s an example. Suppose you have a monthly email newsletter. It’s getting close to your publish date. You’re scrambling for ideas. What to write, what to say? Brainstorming is one way to flesh out ideas, but how about doing something unrelated like biking, napping, or gardening? Your subconscious mind will tackle your dilemma and give you the ideas you need.

Marketing is a vital aspect to your online business. You owe it to yourself to bring the best of you to the table. Taking time to relax and regroup is a great strategy for success.
